Stepping out of our comfort zones offers many rewards, so why don’t we leave them more often? And why do we create them in the first place? Because they make us feel safe.
Comfort Zones = Safe Havens
Generally, we create comfort zones unintentionally. They’re like safe havens to us: familiar, predictable, and comfortable. However, they can also be limiting. They can prevent us from trying new things, meeting new people, travelling to new places, and achieving our full potential.
Stepping Out Of Those Self-Created Comfort Zones
Stepping out of our comfort zones can be scary. It means facing the unknown, taking risks, and putting ourselves in uncomfortable situations. But it can also be incredibly rewarding, which is why we need to push ourselves to step out of them more often.
How Do We Go About It?
The first thing we need to know, as we already touched on, is that it’s probably going to be scary. But this fear comes from a place of the unknown. It’s our minds, racing ahead, anticipating an outcome that may never happen. One of the many descriptions of fear is literally that: ‘false endings appearing real’.
Each time you edge yourself out from that safe haven, you’ll learn and grow. You’ll be forced to learn new things so that you can adapt to the new situation you find yourself in. This, in turn, can help you grow as a person and develop new skills.
Increased Confidence
With these new skills comes more confidence. And the more you practice leaving your comfort zone, the more confident you’ll become. This is when you realise you’re capable of so much more than you ever thought possible!
Finding Your Courage
You need courage to take those first steps but the more you do it, the more courageous you’ll become. In turn, this can help you achieve your goals and live a more fulfilling life.
Exposing yourself to new ideas and perspectives also makes you more open-minded. This can help you gain more understanding of others and develop your sense of empathy, too.
It Can Be Fun To Step Out Of Your Comfort Zones
It may not seem like it at first, when you’re taking those frightening first steps, but you will probably have fun – once you allow yourself to. This can (and probably will) lead to new experiences, friends, and adventures.
Start Small
Don’t try to do too much, too soon. Start with small steps that are just slightly uncomfortable, and give yourself time to reflect on the situation. This could be something as simple as changing the route you drive to work, shopping in a different supermarket, or wearing a colour you usually don’t wear.
When you’re struggling, these tiny changes can provide the impetus to move on to something bigger. Only after making these changes should you start working your way up to bigger challenges.
Starter Steps To Help Us Leave Our Comfort Zones
Set realistic goals so you’re not setting yourself up for failure. That doesn’t mean your goals shouldn’t be challenging – but they do need to be achievable.
Can you volunteer an afternoon to help out in a charity shop? Or perhaps sign up for a fundraising challenge, such as a 5K walk or something similar? Doing things like this will not only open you up to new experiences, but they’ll also bring new people into your life.
Patience Is Key
Be patient and show yourself compassion, and don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. It takes time to build new habits and leave your comfort zone for good. It’s important to remember that it’s an accumulation of small changes that helps to make big changes in your life.
Reward yourself each time you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone and done something new – you deserve it! This can help keep you motivated to keep taking risks in the future.
