Do you know how to get motivated every day? And more importantly, how to stay that way?
Is It Even Possible To Be Motivated Every Single Day?
Yes, it is – but it’s not always easy, especially when we’re ‘not in the mood’, or external factors have caused our mood to plummet. This can make us self-sabotage, procrastinate, or worse, give up completely.
What Is Motivation?
Motivation is the driving force that pushes us to take action. It’s what gets us out of bed in the morning and keeps us going, even when things are tough. Without motivation, it can be difficult to achieve our goals and even harder to make progress towards them.
There are many things that can affect our motivation: our goals, our values, our beliefs, and our emotions. If we are clear about our goals and what we want to achieve, we’re more likely to be motivated to take action. Obviously, goals need to be defined and an action plan put in place in the first instance.
When we believe in ourselves and our abilities, we’re also more likely to be motivated. And when we are feeling positive emotions such as excitement or enthusiasm, we are even more likely to be motivated to take action.
How To Get Motivated On A Daily Basis
There are a number of things that we can do to get motivated daily. In our research, we’ve identified the following as being most important.
Set Goals
When we have clearly defined goals, we have something to strive for. It’s important to set goals that are challenging but achievable. If they’re too easy, we won’t be motivated to work towards them. By the same token, if our goals are too difficult, we may become discouraged and give up.
Break down your goals into smaller steps as this will make them seem less daunting and overwhelming, and more manageable and achievable.
Visualise Your Success
Take some time to visualise yourself achieving your goals – this can help you stay motivated and focused.
Find A Mentor Or Role Model
Following and interacting with someone who has already achieved what you want to achieve can be useful, as this person may be able to offer guidance and support. They may also help you to stay motivated.
Reward Yourself For Your Progress
When you reach a milestone, take some time to celebrate your success. Each time you do this it’ll help boost your motivation and push you to keep moving forward.
Take Care Of Yourself
Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly. When we look after ourselves properly, we have more energy and focus, which can help us stay on track.
Avoid Negative Self-Talk
The way we talk to ourselves can have a big impact on our motivation, so avoid negative self-talk. When we focus on our weaknesses and failures we make it difficult to stay motivated. Instead, we need to focus on our strengths and what we have to offer. (If you struggle with identifying your own strengths, sit down with a trusted friend and ask for their help.)
Build A Support System
Having people who believe in you and support your goals can be a great way to stay motivated. Talk to your friends, family, or a therapist about your goals and how they can help you achieve them.
Don’t Give Up!
There will be times when you feel like giving up but it’s important to remember that everyone experiences setbacks. The key is to pick yourself up and keep going.
Some Hints & Tips That May Help You
- Set realistic expectations: don’t expect to change your entire life overnight. Start with small changes and gradually build up your motivation.
- Read books that encourage you.* They could be personal development books, or perhaps the autobiographies of your favourite successful people. It doesn’t matter, as long as they help you in some way and give you a much-needed boost.
- It’s important to take breaks when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Get up and move around, or take a few minutes to take some deep breaths, relax, and clear your head.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your friends or wider support network if you’re struggling.
And Finally …
Motivation is a complex topic but there are many things we can do to increase our own motivation and stay focused on our goals.
Most importantly, when you’re feeling discouraged, think about why you wanted this goal in the first place. Remembering why we started can help us stay motivated and focused on the path to success.
