Before we dive into 10 ways to boost (or find) your self confidence, let’s look at the basic definition of self-confidence.
Self confidence is not just a single thing, it’s a process. It involves how we think about ourselves, how we function in challenging situations, and our overall mental health and wellbeing. It’s the inner, private part of ourselves that we project into the world around us.
Improving Your Self-Confidence Can Change Your Life
It’s no secret that prioritising our mental health should come first, even if it goes hand in hand with our physical health. If we’re feeling a bit down, a brisk walk can raise our spirits in the short term. But unless we address the underlying reasons for why we’re feeling down, we can’t really move forward in our lives.
Looking after ourselves isn’t a luxury, or something to do when we’ve got nothing else to do: it’s a priority, and we have to treat it as an essential part of every day. So grab your journal, notebook or laptop, give yourself plenty of time, and let’s get to work!
NB this process may take you several days. Some people prefer to do one exercise per day, then take time to reflect on what they’ve written, but it’s entirely up to you how you proceed.
10 Ways You Can Improve Your Self-Confidence
Number 1: Discover Your Strengths And Weaknesses
What are your strengths and weaknesses? Take some time to reflect on your talents, skills, and abilities. What are you good at and what are you not so good at? Once you have a better understanding of them, you can start to focus on building on your strengths, and improving your weaknesses.
Number 2: Identify Your Values
What is important to you in life? What do you believe in? When you know your values, you can start to make decisions that are aligned with them. This will help you feel more confident in your choices and actions.
Number 3: What Are Your Goals?
Your goals and desires are important. What do you want to achieve in life? Having goals can give you a sense of direction and purpose, and can help you stay motivated and focused.
Number 4: What Are You Proud Of?
Take some time to think about your accomplishments. Are there things you’ve achieved that you are proud of? Remembering your accomplishments can help you feel good about yourself and in turn, boost your confidence.
Number 5: What Are Your interests?
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Having interests can help you connect with others and find things you’re passionate about. This can also help you feel more confident in yourself and your abilities.
Number 6: Identify Your Boundaries
It’s important to know what you’re comfortable and not comfortable with. Setting boundaries will help you protect yourself, and this in turns helps you feel more confident in your decisions.
Number 7: What Are Your Self-limiting Beliefs?
These are the negative thoughts that you have about yourself. Unless you move past them, they will hold you back from achieving your goals and living your best life. When you identify your self-limiting beliefs, you can also start to challenge them. Then you can replace them with more positive thoughts. One of the best ways to do this is using the Law of Attraction, so if that resonates with you, read up on it and then put it into practice.
Number 8: Who Are Your Role Models?
Who do you admire and look up to? Role models can inspire you to stay motivated by showing you what’s possible. After all, if they can do it (whatever it is), so can you!
Number 9: Decide Your Affirmations
Affirmations are positive statements that you repeat to yourself. They can help you change your mindset and boost your confidence. (We touch on replacing negatives with positives in our article, Overcoming Negative Beliefs Around Money.)
Number 10: What Are Your Actions?
Actions speak louder than words. If you want to be more confident, you need to start acting more confident. This means taking risks, stepping outside of your comfort zone, and believing in yourself. Obviously, it’s easier said than done, but there is so much information available to us, we can certainly find ways to do it. Look for books on success, goal-setting etc – we have some on our Books We Recommend page and many more on our Amazon Recommended Reading* list.
And Finally …
We hope this information helps you on your journey to finding more self confidence. Remember, it is a journey, not a destination. Yes, there’ll be ups and downs, but if you keep working at it, you will eventually reach your goals.
